For more than 10 years, Internet Explorer was the go-to web browser for Internet users around the world. IE’s success would be short-lived, however, given its constant bugs, security issues and general sluggish speed. Of course, Safari for Mac iOS and Mozilla Firefox wasted no time in giving IE a run for its money, especially seeing as Microsoft effortlessly outlasted Netscape.

However, the layout of the web browser landscape changed considerably when Google’s Chrome browser hit the market in December of 2008. The open-source application now holds an exceptional 40% of global browser market share, and is compatible with Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android and iOS. With so many advantages, it’s easy to see why the browser has overtaken both Firefox and IE in recent years.

Why Chrome Is So Well Loved

There are many reasons why Google Chrome has become so popular with its users. On start up, the browser fires up far more quickly than either Internet Explorer or Firefox by using a custom-built JavaScript engine. While not all complex web pages will appear at the same lightning speed while using Chrome, this browser is undeniably faster and more efficient than its peers.

Chrome also has several key features that make users’ experience much easier. Take its Omnibox, for example, which can be used for web searches and web addresses and can also pin users’ most visited websites for a faster start up every time. Chrome is also exceptionally easy to synchronise by using your Google account, meaning that no matter which device you’re using, you’ll be able to access all of your data, browsing history and more.

Of course, Chrome’s superior safe browsing technology, notable privacy, and automatic updating also make its users experiences more pleasant overall. Even web developers of everything from real money online casinos to news sites and eCommerce engines favour Chrome as their favourite browser due to less bugs and the key developer features that are available via its open source platform.

Advantages And Disadvantages of Google Chrome

Whether you want a smoother gaming experience or more user-friendly browsing overall, there are many reasons why so many people are switching to Chrome. This browser’s main advantages are:

    • Chrome is exceptionally fast when it comes to loading and displaying pages, and has fewer bugs and unresponsive scripts on average than many other browsers.
    • Many applications are designed specifically for Chrome due to its widespread popularity, and run more smoothly on the browser because of this.
    • It has a basic, easy to use design with more in-depth development tools for those who wish to use them.
    • Your most frequently visited pages will be listed automatically and are easy to access from your Chrome home page.
    • Built-in Google Translate automatically translates web pages in other languages.
    • Incognito Mode allows you to browse the web without being tracked or the browser retaining any of your web history.
    • Chrome allows you to unify your experience by logging into your Google account on any devices you prefer, including mobile.
    • The browser also has a variety of plugins and extensions available to customise your experience.

In terms of Chrome’s disadvantages, its users agree that they are few and far between. However, one or two things to bear in mind about the browser are that it tends to use a fair amount of RAM to run itself, and if you accidentally close your Chrome browser, it may close all of your tabs without warning. Another thing to bear in mind is tracking. Many users find that the fact Google tracks your online movements and uses cookies to collect or track browsing data a bit disturbing and an invasion of privacy, but fortunately this feature can be disabled quickly and easily.

Google Chrome has succeeded where other search engines have failed and it continues to beat Bing, Yahoo! Chacha.com, Mozilla Firefox and a host of other smaller options in the popularity stakes.
