Adam Sandler Stars In New Sports Betting Film
Uncut Gems is a brand-new film that centres on sports betting as the main theme and plotline. Adam Sandler has taken up the lead role, and Uncut Gems will hit cinemas in December 2019. It’s a serious turn for Sandler and has garnered him much acclaim already since the film’s debut at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this year.
The plot revolves around Howard Ratner (played by Sandler) who is a jeweller by trade, living and working in New York City. Ratner gets into sports betting and his first few forays go well for him, enticing the character into more and more high stakes gambling opportunities. This, unfortunately, leads the character into dealings with some shady people from the underbelly of the sports betting world. This is where the real drama of the film begins to take shape and Ratner starts to unravel.
Sandler Steps Away from Comedy
The film debuted at the Telluride Film Festival back in August this yea, and was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The early reviews have been highly positive about both the overall film and Sandler’s acting, and there has even been some talk of Oscar nominations. Howard Ratner is a very different role for Sandler, but this could be the moment where he steps out of his comedic antics and is seen as a serious actor. According to one review from The Gaurdian’s Wendy Ide, the film is excellent and sure to thrill audiences.
The Safdie brothers, Joshua and Benjamin, directed Uncut Gems. They are responsible for movies such as 2017’s Good Times and 2014’s Heaven Knows What. Other stars in the film include two celebrities who are playing themselves. The first is Mike Francesa, a well-known radio talk show host who works in New York City. The second is Kevin Garnett, a former star player in the NBA.
Sports Betting On The Big Screen
This certainly isn’t the first time that the world of sports betting has hit the big screen. It also isn’t the first time that filmmakers have decided to explore the seedier underbelly that accompanies this world. Storylines range from focusing on the lives of bookies, to the lives of the sports stars that are corrupted by the opportunity to make money from throwing matches or games.
As far back as 1961, movies were focusing on this topic. The Hustler, starring Paul Newman, revolves around a pool hustler who wants to make it to the big time, high-stakes games. More recent films on sports betting include Two For the Money and Lay the Favourite.
