Celebrity Kids Then and Now
When you’re not playing slots or table games at your favourite online casino, what do you do? Some—let’s be honest, most of us—like to keep up to date on the latest celebrity news. Who’s married who? Who’s had a baby? Whose babies have grown up and whose are now celebrities themselves?
Born into privilege and the world spotlight, these celebrity kids have it all. Or at least that’s what it often looks like from far away. All the toys, cool clothes, and good schools, and fancy friendships are available to celebrity kids, right? They’re guaranteed a life of riches and easy access to fame. What more could you want?
But the children of the biggest celebrities also grow up under an intensely bright spotlight. The relentless paparazzi follow their moms and dads around day and night, but the cameras also want shots of them. Imagine being followed to the playground and having pictures of yourself going down a slide on the internet. Let’s not forget how Suri Cruise was chased around the world as her parents, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, were going through a very public divorce and bitter custody battle. That part doesn’t sound fun.
Still, it's not all bad for the children of celebrities. The tots and toddlers of famous actors, athletes, models, and moguls do have a lot of advantages. They’re likely grow up to run the music industry, star in the next generation's biggest movies, and walk the red carpet at countless awards ceremonies.
Let’s take a look at a few of these famous little faces and see how some have grown up…
Power Couples and their Power Children
Put two incredibly talented people in a relationship together and you get a power couple. And everything that comes with it—new art, great music, and amazing films. Then, babies! When powerful people have kids, the rest of us just have to watch and wait to see what kind of amazing things they come up with.
Take Will Smith and Jada-Pinkett Smith. Between the two of them, we get films, music, businesses, and documentaries. Then, they had children. Willow and Jaden Smith are the children of the infinitely cool power pair, Will and Jada-Pinkett Smith. Jaden is 21 years old, born on July 8, 1998. Jaden has said that growing up famous was hard, and he chose to be homeschooled after being isolated at school. He took up skateboarding, then acting, then rapping and songwriting.
As for Willow, she was born on October 31, 2000. She took up acting early—at the age of seven, and immediately started making music. She now goes by only her first name, Willow, and is mentored by Jay-Z. When she signed to Roc Nation in 2010, she became the youngest artist ever to be signed to the label. We can’t wait to see where she’ll go from here.
And then there’s Blue Ivy, the oldest daughter of Jay-Z and Beyonce. When Beyonce announced she was pregnant at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2011, the announcement won a Guinness World Record for "most tweets per second recorded for a single event" on Twitter. So we’d say Blue Ivy made her presence known with a splash.
She was born on January 7, 2012, and the world still doesn’t know too much about her. Jay-Z and Beyonce are private people, and they keep Blue Ivy close. But we do know that the oldest Carter child is already a force to be reckoned with. She attends public events with her parents from time to time, and she always arrives wearing something beautiful. It’s clear that she already has style—and a mind of her own. With her twin siblings, Rumi and Sir, by her side, Blue Ivy is sure to succeed in whatever she chooses.
The Rich and the Famous… and the Royal
Having "powerful" parents is one thing, but having royal parents is another story entirely. No royals are more famous than the Windsors—the UK’s royal family. And perhaps no royal has more power or international clout than Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge. He was a famous child himself when he was born in June 1982 to the late and beloved Diana, Princess of Wales and Charles, Prince of Wales. He’s second in line to the British throne.
And that means William’s children are pretty famous too, though like Blue Ivy Carter we don’t know too much about them. Prince George was born on July 22, 2013, and he’s third in line to the British throne at just six years old. George has two siblings, Charlotte and Louis. Barring something tragic, Charlotte and Louis won’t rule the United Kingdom. Instead, they’ll get to have quieter lives with somewhat milder celebrity status.
All of the royal children have stolen the show at every outing they've been a part of—from Princess Eugenie's wedding to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. As the kids get older, they are sure to dive right into their royal responsibilities.
But even now, the royal children have an impact on the world. Have you heard of the "Prince George effect?" It’s kind of a big deal. For better or for worse, George’s celebrity means big things for businesses. When he travels or appears publicly, people around the world scramble to get the same clothes he’s seen wearing, toys he’s seen playing with, and food he’s seen eating.
The tiny royal was ranked No. 49 on GQ's "50 Best Dressed Men in Britain" list in 2015—he was hardly a man and just two years old. In 2016, the dressing gown he wore while meeting President Obama sold out after he was seen wearing it. And in September 2017 the news that the Prince's school had served a Le Puy green lentil dish resulted in a spike in the legume's sales. In 2018, George became the youngest person to appear on Tatler's best-dressed list. Talk about fame!
Children in the Swirl of Celebrity Drama
Tabloids can be fun in the supermarket checkout aisle or in a quick internet scroll, but the stakes are higher when children are involved. Earlier, we mentioned the most obvious example: Suri Cruise, the daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. Suri was born on April 18, 2006, and her parents divorced in 2012 to a swirl of tabloid coverage. Now, Suri is 13 years old, and her mom has primary physical custody.
These days, Suri leads a more private life. She spends time at school and volunteering with her mom. "I enjoy volunteering with my daughter and hearing her point of view and listening to her suggestions on how we can help," Katie told Australia’s Stellar Magazine. Maybe Suri will grow up to be one of our great philanthropists.
And then there’s Ben Affleck, the Batman actor, with his checkered past in Hollywood. He was banned for life from playing blackjack at the Hard Rock Casino in Vegas, but before that, he was cleaning up at the game for years.
The Hollywood high-roller, booted for counting cards, had hit it big playing “21” at the very same casino, raking in a total of nearly $1 million in two trips. The Oscar winner won $140,000 in a single sitting while playing with pal Matt Damon in 2000, The New York Post reported at the time.
But Affleck isn’t just a card shark. He’s also a devoted dad. Before Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck got divorced in 2018, the famous couple had been together for 16 years, married for 10 of them, and had produced three children: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.
Seraphina was a celebrity almost immediately after her birth on January 6, 2009, when she was quickly nominated for her first award: the Teen Choice Award for Choice Celebrity Baby. Little Seraphina missed out to Honor Marie Warren, daughter of Jessica Alba and Cash Warren.
It’s hard to know what Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel will do as they grow older. For now, it seems like they’re trying to stay out of the spotlight.
Rocking and Rolling into the Spotlight
Who said having children is incompatible with the life of a rocker? It might be a challenge to raise a child while you’re on the road all the time, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Let’s take Ava Sambora, for example. Ava is the daughter of Heather Locklear and the Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. She was born on October 4, 1997 in Los Angeles. Now, Ava’s parents have split up, but she’s growing into adulthood as a 20 year old actress and model. She’s also trying to have a normal college experience. Ava attends Loyola Marymount University and is a member of Alpha Phi Women’s Fraternity.
The world mourned the sudden and tragic loss of Kurt Cobain. The rocker left behind his long-time partner Courtney Love and his young daughter, Frances. Frances Bean Cobain, the only child of late Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain and his wife Courtney Love, was born on August 18, 1992.
Frances Bean is all grown up now, and she works as a visual artist and model, appearing in a Marc Jacobs ad campaign. She has done extensive work cementing her father’s legacy. She produced the HBO documentary Cobain: Montage of Heck and posed for her Elle magazine wearing her dad’s clothing.
And then there’s Mick Jagger. At the height of their fame, Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger were an undeniable power couple. Hall was a leggy super model while Jagger remains of rock history’s most iconic stars. The famous pair are the parents of the Georgia May, born on January 12, 1992. She inherited her father’s full lips and her mother’s easy grace. She has worked as a model all over the world and is represented by IMG. Georgia May has also designed collections with Volcom and Mulberry.
Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet were once one of the world’s most gorgeous and talented super-couples. They introduced the world to Zoe Isabella Kravitz, who was born on December 1, 1988. The 29-year-old, actress, model, and singer Zoe has inherited both her parents' bohemian style and artistic talents. She plays Leta Lestrange in the Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and she also starred in Big Little Lies on HBO.
The Next Wikileaks?
Whistleblowers aren’t quite like other celebrities. They don’t usually start out famous on their own, and rather get that way by alerting the public to bad actors. They have children though, just like everyone else, and those children sometimes turn out to be accidental celebrities like their parents. Or, they’re kept completely secret.
Have you heard of someone named Assange—Daniel Assange? Yes, he’s the son of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, the same one who was dragged out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in 2019. Daniel, rumored to be the child of Julian Assange and a high school gilfriend, is now in his late twenties and living in Melbourne, Australia. He keeps a low profile, and reportedly works as a software designer.
In 2010, Daniel gave a rare interview to Crikey, where he talked about his father. "I never thought he was going to succeed," Daniel said about his dad. "It was a ridiculous concept, that he was going to actually leak government documents to the entire world."
But how many children does Assange have? The answer is unknown. In his book, Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World's Most Dangerous Website, former WikiLeaks spokesperson Daniel Domscheit-Berg claimed that Assange admitted to having multiple children.
"Often I sat in large groups and listened to Julian boast about how many children he had fathered in various parts of the world," Domschiet-Berg wrote. "He seemed to enjoy the idea of lots and lots of Julians, one on every continent. Whether he took care of any of these alleged children, or whether they existed at all, was another question."
We Could Just Eat Them Up
Just imagine being the child of a famous chef or cooking personality. You’d get to eat great food all the time! That’s what life must be like for the children of superstar chef Gordon Ramsay. You know, the TV personality known for his short temper and foul mouth.
Ramsay’s son Jack inherited his dad’s love for food and his driven personality. The youngster most recently joined the British Royal Navy Elite. But Ramsay’s most famous child is Matilda. Born on November 8, 2001, and just 18 years old, Matilda is a television presenter and famous chef. She has her own show on British television, and a cookbook that came out in 2017.
Luna and Miles Stephens, the children of musical superstar John Legend and model, cookbook author, and internet personality Chrissy Teigen. John and Chrissy met in 2006 on the set of Legend’s music video, "Stereo" and dated for four years before getting engaged. They conceived Luna through in vitro fertilization in 2015 (she was born April 14, 2016) and their son Miles was born on May 16, 2018.
Luna and Miles are still little, but fans of Chrissy Teigen will recognize them instantly from their appearances on her Instagram and Twitter accounts.
Athletes and Actors
Riley Curry was born to basketball legend Stephen Curry and actress Ayesha Curry on July 19, 2012. She also has a younger sister, Ryan, and a little brother, Canon. But Riley stole the show early on, during her dad’s post-basketball game press conferences. When she was just two years old, she insisted on sitting on her dad’s lap while he talked to the cameras, and even shushed him. Now, she’s just seven years old but is already a child model.
According to Steph Curry, Riley already outshines her famous parents."She's got a great sense of humor," he said to Parents Magazine a few years ago. "Now she's the star of the family. If we go somewhere without her, the first question people ask us is, 'Where's Riley?’"
One of the world’s most famous soccer players, David Beckham, married a Spice Girl. And it was immediately clear to anyone who’d ever looked at the stars that their children would be beautiful. Now, they have four children: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper.
Brooklyn Beckham, their oldest son, was born on March 4, 1999. Brooklyn has already started to make waves in the modeling world. He’s known for a brooding stare that’s the perfect mix between his parents’ looks. Brooklyn was previously linked to actress Chloe Grace Moretz. He is also a talented photographer and has followed in his father’s footsteps with his tattoo collection all over his body.
