How Digital Verification Impacts Online Casinos

Panellists at an SBC event on digital payments concluded that consistency is crucial in growing the acceptance of digital verification, not just for online casinos, but for other industries too. Industry leaders took part in a panel entitled ‘The opportunity for Digital ID in a physical world’. They analysed the details of digital verification and how it could potentially alter the way that things operate.
Ralph Topping, the former CEO of William Hill, highlighted the fact that digital identification should be seen as an opportunity instead of an issue. He mentioned that statistically, around 20% of adults do not have a photographic form of identity such as a passport or driver’s license. He added that IDs take a lot of the hassle out of playing at online casinos and allow players to start placing their bets almost instantaneously. He elaborated by saying that digital verification allows for quicker compliance checks and at present, there is no charge for these kinds of services, making it perfect for the casino games online industry, amongst others.
Simon Bazalgette, independent non-executive director and former CEO of the English Football League and Jockey Club added more about these new digital technologies. He emphasized that self-service machines and digital verification at racecourses in the UK could make for transformational development. If these new technologies allow for self-service betting stations, then they will work exceptionally well for the online casino industry.
Mr Bazalgette added that in markets in France, the US and Hong Kong, self-service terminals have been a massive part of racecourse betting. However, due to the fact that racecourses are seen as being ‘family-friendly’, being able to fall back on some form of digital verification to ensure that all players are of age is of utmost importance. This same kind of technology can easily be applied to those who play casino games online.
A Viable Option
Digital verification is indeed a viable option for the iGaming industry. However, the panel agreed that there needs to be a level of trust established in order for this kind of verification to be effective for those playing real money casino games online.
The panel suggested that perhaps a framework needs to be established if this is to work for online casino players. This framework must pertain to how data is stored and shared so that players can enjoy their games with peace of mind knowing that all of their private information is kept safe.
