PokerStars’ popular online casino tournament, Sunday Storm, with a guaranteed $1 million payout, ran into technical issues recently and had to be cancelled. 64 617 Poker online players had registered for the 10th-anniversary event before the software went into freefall. The clock kept running and the blinds rose and rose, but no one received any cards!

Angry customers accused PokerStars of cancelling the event because of the overlay it would have incurred but the operator paid out, putting these claims to rest. Even so, players holding bigger stacks didn’t do that well. The winner ended up getting just $208.92, very short of the $100 000 online casino payout they were expecting.

Disappointed Sunday Stormers

PokerStars’ Sunday Storm tournament usually takes place every Sunday and offers players a buy-in of just $11 and the opportunity to re-enter as many as six times. Before the cancellation, however, a further 35 383 Poker online players would have been required to enter to ensure the pot reached the $1 million guarantee.

Technical issues were blamed for the abandonment and the online casino games certainly froze some time in. PokerStars announced the dissolution of the tournament at 22:45 British Summer Time in a tweet that stated that, due to software problems, the Anniversary event had to be cancelled. The tweet additionally explained that the tournament was going to be rolled forward and that the guarantee would be paid out.

Interestingly, the technological issues only affect the Sunday Storm event. All of PokerStars’ other happenings unfolded glitch-free. The firm did pay out the full $1 million to the entrants, however.

Payout Stated in the T&Cs

The operator’s actions in the event of server issues is clearly outlined in the rules available on the site for cancellations, so PokerStars is not technically in the wrong by any means. Doug Mair, one of the online casino game entrants, wasn’t happy about it, however, tweeting words to the effect that the business was trying to back out of an unprofitable event.

There were 42 026 new entries to the Sunday Storm Poker online tournament and 22 591 re-entries. Since only $646 170 was collected, the overlay was pretty hefty, explaining players’ concerns.

But PokerStars stepped up to the plate and ended up paying out the full $1 million prize pool. 16 667 places received $19.26 each and the other 50% of the entrants collected an amount corresponding to what their chip count was when the software crashed.
